This project uses strong visual contrasts to highlight the huge human and financial costs of the War on Terror after 9/11. The limited use of red and black gives the visuals a sense of seriousness that fits the topic.

The visualization shows a clear imbalance: for every $1 al-Qaeda spent on the 9/11 attacks, the U.S. spent $7 million in response over the next ten years. This highlights the uneven economic impact of terrorism. Since 2001, the number of terrorist groups worldwide has grown, which raises doubts about how effective military counterterrorism has been.

The bold color scheme and straightforward display of financial and human costs make the visualization not only informative but also serious in tone. These design choices match the importance of the topic and show that visualization can serve as both a way to share information and as a record of history.

Published near the 20th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, this visualization offers important historical context for both events. Linking the start and end of this period helps viewers see the full course of the War on Terror and its effects.
