Some topics require a careful visual approach. In this project for The Decree Chronicles, based on an article by Diana Mesesan, I explored a major change in Romania’s reproductive healthcare. Many doctors who refuse to perform abortions in public hospitals still provide these services privately, but only for a fee.
This topic involves ethics, healthcare fairness, systemic double standards, and gender rights. My job was more than showing numbers; I needed to create visuals that honored the seriousness of the subject without making it dramatic. Abortion statistics are not just numbers. They stand for real people facing personal decisions in a system that often lets them down.

I chose not to use sharp bar charts or bold infographics. Instead, I used a leaf motif, with each leaf standing for a data point. This approach replaced traditional bars, making the visuals softer but still clear. The metaphor was gentle but purposeful: leaves, as natural and delicate shapes, reflected the complexity of the issue.

This project taught me about visual responsibility and how to handle sensitive topics with care, clarity, and purpose. Design should not overshadow the subject, especially when it involves vulnerable people or complex ethical issues. Simplicity and respect are most important.
Here, taste was not about looks but about ethics. I chose visual restraint as a way to show responsibility to both the topic and the people involved. The impact came not from dramatic visuals, but from giving readers space to pause and think about the hidden contradictions in the system.
