Are Americans more likely to prefer dogs or cats, and does this vary by where they live? To find out, I made a tile map that uses cat and dog icons to show each state’s pet-ownership preferences.

 

The visualization started out simple, but I improved it over several rounds. I updated the design and look, making it better while keeping the main idea the same.

 

This project shows how visualization design can change and get better over time without losing its main message. Using familiar animal icons helps people recognize and connect with the data, making the patterns easier to remember.
