This project started when I noticed how older generations often say things like, “during my youth, we didn’t have this or that.” Instead of ignoring these comparisons, I wanted to create a place to check these claims against real data, since comparing is something people naturally do.

 

In this interactive story, you can choose your age group and see what life was like for someone your age in 1990. It compares eight important life indicators across ten age groups, showing how experiences and choices have changed for women and men over the past 30 years.

 

Instead of looking at everyone together, the data is adjusted within each age group. This way, it’s easier to see how behaviors have changed for each group, without getting lost in the bigger trends.

To highlight the time-travel idea, I added a subtle “glitch” effect, similar to the TV static from the ’90s, and set it against the cleaner look of 2021. This small detail helps show the main idea: comparing the past and present side by side.
