Romania is 17th in the European Union for ATMs per 100,000 adults and 12th for bank branches per 100,000 adults.
Banking infrastructure in the EU has changed a lot in the past decade. From 2010 to 2020, countries closed about 40% of their commercial bank branches on average, and about 7% of ATMs were removed.
The infographic below shows how bank branches and ATMs are spread out across EU countries.
I chose to use two bubble charts instead of a bar chart. Each bubble contains dots that represent the number of units—one bubble for ATMs and one for bank branches. This non-linear format may take a bit longer to read, but it invites people to slow down, look closely, and interact with the data in a more visual and natural way.
